PRIDE GUIDE 1998 GAY PEOPle's ChroNICLE B-7

From kings to jokers, festival has something for all

Columbus-The entertainment lineup at the LesBiGay Holiday Pride Celebration on June 28 is sure to include something for everyone's tastes. Nationally known openly-gay comic Ja-

Prior to her eight-year retirement, Tara served as show director at the Grotto II, and was a cast member of the Twilight Lounge,

both Columbus clubs now closed. Tara returned to female illusion two years ago, and has won the hearts of many. Her moves, dance steps, and generous heart have definitely brought her to where she is today. “The word entertainment was created for Tara Richmond," said Sovereignty magazine.

"Thank you for believing in me, even when I didn't believe in myself," Tara said in a Pride mes-

son Stuart and up-and-coming lesbian comic Julie Goldman will bring laughs, the Susans and Donna Magavero will both perform their unique acoustic folk music, and the Columbus Gay Men's Chorus will raise their voices in Pride. Tara Richmond, the Fabulous Johnson Brothers and the H.I.S. Drag Kings will provide festivalgoers with their special brand of entertainment.

Tara Richmond is currently the show director at Tremont, 708 S. High St. in Columbus. She is the reigning Miss Mardi Gras 19981999, and will be surrendering her titles as the first ever Miss Columbus Gay Pride 1997-98 and Miss Ohio

H.I.S. Kings, an all-lesbian drag king troupe. "We were freaks in our town because of what we did, but that was our badge of honor," Pickering said. "It gave us something to focus on."

By 1992, Pickering and original bandmates and high school buddies Doug Beale, Benjamin Clark, and Curtis Roberts focused on expanding the band to its current nine-member size and defining their sound. Today, they are influenced by artists as diverse as Duke Ellington, Billie Holliday, the Rolling Stones, Prince, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and Parliament Funkadelic.

Beale said, "We have the capability to change something for the better and I want the walls to be broken down and see all kinds of people walk out of our show with smiles."

H.I.S. Kings, an all-lesbian drag king troupe that has been shaking up the Midwestern queer scene for the past two years,

will also perform during the LesBiGay Holiday Pride Celebration. Named after three original kings-Helen, Ivett, and Sue, this troupe of gender-bending folks prove that there's more to Ohio than cornfields and cowpatties. With performances ranging in style from hip hop to country, golden oldies to reggae, H.I.S. Kings truly are "tha bomb."

These boys and their luscious emcee Lustivious de la Virgion combine lip synching, choreographed dancing and theatrical skits to uphold their promise to deliver "100% Pure Fun." The kings are looking forward to their debut performance at Pride, and invite everybody to come see their show-"where the best looking boys just happen to be girls."

sage to her supporters. "It has been an honor and a privilege to represent the LesBiGay community as well as Stonewall Columbus. It has been the moment of my life."

Vocalist Aaron Pickering of the Fabulous Johnson Brothers said recently, “Our whole purpose is to create a universal groove," which is just what they plan to do on Pride day. Self-described as a "new disco jazz, modern electric, swing, gritty rock, lounge, trip hop with a soulful sax kind of band," the Brothers have risen to the top of the local band scene in Columbus, and are about to take it to the next level with the release of their debut album.

Their original music has been humorously defined as 'daily affirmations' since their songs do convey life, hope, and good vibes to the audience through their poppin' horn section and their playful onstage antics.
